There are only a few groups of people for whom nitrous oxide might not be appropriate, including those who are pregnant or have certain respiratory conditions.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Gloved hand on nitrous oxide machine, administering sedationNitrous oxide works via a simple and quick process. First, you must wear a nose mask. Then, you will begin to breathe in the nitrous oxide gas. It is mostly odorless, but in some cases, it may have a pleasant fragrance added to it. It will begin to take effect almost immediately. Within a minute or two, you should start to feel relaxed. Some people also experience feelings of giddiness (which is why nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas). After your procedure, the effects of the nitrous oxide should wear off within minutes, so it will be safe for you to drive yourself home.

Aftercare for Nitrous Oxide

We will want to make sure that you are feeling normal and that you are alert enough to drive home. Beyond that, there is no downtime required. You should be able to resume your normal work or school routine immediately after your appointment, unless the procedure that you underwent requires some extra rest as part of your recovery process. Of course, if you begin to suspect that you are experiencing bad side effects from the nitrous oxide (which is very rare), call your sedation dentist in Ardmore right away.
