Keeping Your Smiles Bright this Holiday Season

November 5, 2017

Holiday DessertsEveryone wants a beautiful smile, and at the holidays when we’re taking pictures with friends and family, a flawless smile becomes even more important. Unfortunately, the holidays put many patients at greater risk for oral health and hygiene concerns. From acidic beverages and sweet treats to less time for tooth brushing, your smile is under constant attack throughout the holidays. Keep reading to find out what dentists recommend to keep your smiles bright this holiday season and all year long.

Moderation is Key

We all want to take advantage of all the delicious sweets, fizzy sodas, wine, and more, but these holiday treats can take a toll on our oral and overall health. When it comes to holiday treats, moderation is your best bet. Consume only a small amount of these sugary or acidic foods and drinks, and don’t sip on drinks or snack throughout the day. Instead, consume these foods and drinks as part of a meal or within half an hour. Then, drink water or brush teeth to remove as much plaque as possible.

Keep up With Your Oral Hygiene

Regular brushing and flossing is even more important when you’re consuming higher than usual quantities of sweets during the holidays. You may want to consider brushing between meals or bringing along a small container of antimicrobial oral rinse to remove plaque and bacteria from teeth. It’s also important to keep your preventive dentistry checkups at this time of the year. Even if you’re busy, take the time to care for your smile.

Recognize Stressors & Effects on Oral Health

Many people, unfortunately, experience stress during the holiday. These patients may grind or clench their teeth during sleep. Some people experience chronic teeth grinding and clenching called bruxism, but others only suffer with teeth grinding when they’re stressed. If you grind or clench your teeth when you’re stressed, know the warning signs, and talk to your dentist about a custom or store bought mouthguard you can wear to protect teeth at these stressful times. Some of the warning signs of bruxism include:

  • Morning headaches
  • Sensitive teeth or toothache upon waking
  • Ringing in ears
  • Jaw pain
  • Teeth that appear suddenly shorter
